๐ŸŽ‰ LA City Council approves motion to study democracy vouchers

Exciting news! Yesterday, LA City Council unanimously approved the motion to study the feasibility of establishing a democracy vouchers program, including options for full public financing. This is a major milestone on our path to bring greater levels of equity, accountability, and participation into our city's campaign finance system.

Next up, we plan to make available and accessible the relevant research and studies on democracy vouchers for the Chief Legislative Analyst, along with the City's Ethics Commission, as they produce their report. And in the meantime, as the city considers a range of governance reforms, we aim to continue to get the word out in communities about the transformative promise of democracy vouchers.

A huge thank you to Councilmember Nithya Raman for spearheading this effortโ€”as well as Councilmembers Soto-Martinez and Harris-Dawson for co-presenting the motion. We also want to thank Council President Krekorian for scheduling the item, and Councilmembers Hernandez, Park, and Yaroslavsky for seconding the motion. And we especially want to show our deep appreciation for each and every partner, individual, and organization who joined our sign-on letter or gave public comment, and all of the the neighborhood councils that lent their voice of support to this effort. You all played a tremendous role bringing Los Angeles to this point.

Finally, we want to thank our amazing volunteers, advisors, and anyone who has ever taken time to speak with us. We're grateful for your support and look forward to working together to empower more people to participate in our democracy. If you want to get involved in our campaign, please let us know here or by emailing contact@lademocracyvouchers.org.

Onwards,

-Los Angeles for Democracy Vouchers Team
